roads are dangerous, the mommy bird told the little one.
Monday, July 14, 2008

it hopped a little,
pecked a little.

cocked it head to the side, and turned to look at me.
the cab came, then its gone.

for the first time in my whole entire 'omg rundown birds are grosss' life,
i walked up to the bird, squat down in the middle of the road, and looked.

i saw, in the gory mess of bloodied feathers, guts and bones
i saw the heart that once beat and love, if birds love.

did the driver feel anything, a bump maybe, i don't know.
but maybe all he cared about was for his tyre, if he did.
but no, i hope he's normal. i hope he is human.
i hope he cares, i hope he remembers.
i hope he will cry.

another car came, and i ran off just in time.
the bird got ran over again, but it probably didnt feel any pain.
not anymore.

carcrash is the easiest way to die without feeling weak or selfish.
maybe the bird thinks that way, too.

or maybe, it doesnt even want to die.
i hope whichever little one that it cares for will not be too lonely tonight.
